Learn More About Me and My Work:

Sandra earned her Masters of Arts in Counseling Education from The University of Iowa and a Bachelor of Arts in Speech Communication from Truman State University. She has graduated from the foundational life coach training program at The Institute of Life Coach Training, an institution that has been accredited by the International Coach Federation. Sandra has also successfully completed the “Career Clarity Program,” "Purpose Clarity Program" and “Seasons of Change” programs taught by Carol McClelland, PhD, founder of Transition Dynamics.

  1. What career changes have you made? Why did you become a coach?
  2. In my 15 years of working within Higher Education, I have been employed at several colleges and universities in many roles in academic and student services: Residential Living, Multicultural Affairs, Admissions Counseling, Academic Advising and lately in an Administrative role for a Developmental Education program in a Community College. Each institution (private or public, small or large) has had different policies and politics; each has taught me something different.

Six years after relocating to Philadelphia for a new job, the politics at my job changed dramatically leading to a very toxic office environment. While I was good at my job and enjoyed my role, I began to dread going into the office and interacting with my supervisors. Although I wanted to change jobs and spent months searching, I couldn’t find a job I wanted. After much frustration and introspection I chose to change my attitude about the office--“I’m not going to let them drive me out” of a job I liked! Instead, I intentionally decided to enjoy the role I had at my job and used the time to focus and plan my future career goals. Amazingly enough, once I made that choice I began to feel better about my work environment… and several months later, I found a new job!

While this was a difficult time for me, I now realize I learned two things about careers. First, I excel in a role where I can make a difference; where I’m a part of “something more”. Second, for me it’s also about the challenges. Always learning something new, working with new people and reaching new goals. Of course, it’s never as easy as it sounds.

The million dollar questions?: “What you are looking for?” "How can you achieve this?" and “What are you willing to do about it?” This is where coaching gets exciting!

  3. Why did you become a coach?

For me, coaching is a natural next step. My professional history revolves around higher education. In this role, I have assisted high school students in their transitions to college and later as college students pursue a career. With coaching, I am able to work with individuals to ask the “Big” questions… to explore their dreams and then to assist them in their transitions towards achieving their dreams.

  4. What excites or ignites your soul?
  5. I love asking the powerful questions; questions that humanity has asked itself for centuries. I tend to ask myself these questions often… What do I want to do in this life? Why am I here? What are my dreams?

In society today, most people are so busy they don’t often give themselves permission to dream. They don’t take the time to ask themselves the powerful questions… And when they do, many of them don’t think they can achieve nor deserve these dreams, especially when it has to do with a career. But what would you do? What life would you create? Remember, most of your day is spent at a “job”!

This is what excites me… the possibilities and being witness to a client’s achievements.

  6. What's your favorite element of the Career Clarity Program and Purpose Clarity Program?
  7. I love the introspection. The program doesn’t just ask the traditional career questions, it asks clients to “choose or create” their ideal career. As a coach this process allows me to learn more about the client and assist them through the process.

The online feature of the CCP program documents a client’s progress and then in the later steps synthesizes their goals. The online program offers clients the tools to learn about and actually list their values, interests and goals. This is not just a one time assessment, it’s a process… Clients learn the skills they can use and reuse as they choose or create a career, not just “find a job”.

  8. How do you typically work with clients interested in the Career Clarity Program and Purpose Clarity Program?

I work with clients from across the country over the phone with supplemental email communication.
