Learn More About Me and My Work:
I have a Masters of Education in Agency and Community
Counseling from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. I also have a BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) degree in Radio and Television Broadcasting from the University of Cincinnati. My foundation coach training is from the Institute for Life Coach Training.
I have nearly thirty years of experience in social service and education. I have been a Director of Employment Programs for one of the largest agencies in Kentucky. I taught job seeking skills for ex-offenders for several years. I was the director of a shelter for troubled teenagers and the coordinator of a transitional living program for older teenagers living on their own. For seven years I was an individual counselor and court advocate for survivors of domestic violence or sexual assault. In the late 70's and early 80's, I was a group facilitator for Womonways, an early program for women (and men) exploring how gender issues affect relationships and personal growth.
Over the years I've had many interesting interim jobs including secretarial school teacher, secretary to the Senior Bishop of the worldwide CME denomination, associate producer for television news shows and the Nick Clooney Show, and, when I ws 18 years old, a comedy writer in New York.
I am from New York City but have lived in Miami, Florida; Cincinnati, Ohio; and the small town of Augusta, Kentucky. Currently I live out in the country, between Cincinnati and Lexington, with my husband, stepson and assorted dogs and cat. My grown daughter has been a highly successful retailer and is now studying toward her MBA in Chicago.
One of my callings is helping relatives and desendents of famous and / or highly successful people to find their own way, their own voice, and to build confidence in their own career interests.
My grandfather was a famous writer and I grew up in a family of
Cincinnati retauranteurs so I know the challenges and joys of living up, to or moving away from, the pressures of family successes.
I am also interested in helping older teenagers and young adults struggling to find their own path to career success on their own terms. In many cases, it is parents reaching out for coaching for their children, so I know I need to honor the feelings and concerns of both generations, and, if possible, foster communication between them.
I also love to help my clients with pre-retirement planning as I came to coaching out of my own pre-retirement planning and then decided I couldn't wait!
I changed careers early in my working life. I had been heading down the road to a career in show business. When I was in my late twenties, I had a degree in Radio and Television under my belt, and had been working as a production assistant at a local TV station. In school, I got a lot of praise from professors and peers for my writing and production. Even as a teenager I was a beginning comedy writer in New York. Then everything changed.
I was working as a assistant to our local "Troubleshooter" investigative reporter. Many of the calls for help that we got were not "news", not visual. All we were doing was taking the call and moving on. Then I asked for time to help the callers who were not going to get on the air. Soon afterwards we got a call from a family that had been robbed a few days before Christmas leaving them with no presents for their children. I called a new agency in the area, The Freestore. The social worker at the Freestore said, "Sure, we'll take care of it; just send them down, we can help".
How would it be to be able to help like that…open-handed, no strings attached, day in and day out? It just seemed so ... important. I wanted to be there with them, not in a television studio. Now I know it was my Heartmagnet speaking to me loud and clear. It took a while, and I never did work at the Freestore, but I've been a social worker / counselor for years. And I've been able to say, many, many times. "Sure, come on in; I can help".
I just love to talk on the telephone. As a domestic violence counselor, sometimes I worked for several years with clients I had never seen. There is an intimacy to talking on the phone that doesn't happen in an office. When I found out, to my amazement, that coaches get to work on the telephone all the time, my Heartmagnet told me that this was the next move for me.
The edges
The unserved
The unheard
The underserved
Doing things differently
Doing things that have not been done
The people who do these things
I work with clients locally and across the US. I also do in-person group work and trainings.
