Coach Joan has 14 years in the Human Resources field with experience in staffing, training, team leadership, and employee relations.  She has hired 1,400 people at all levels, including executives and has worked for large and medium sized high tech and healthcare firms in Denver and Chicago. An effective and dynamic coach, speaker, facilitator and trainer – audiences respond to Coach Joan’s warmth, authenticity and humor – and leave with an action plan!

Coach Joan earned her Bachelor of Arts from DePaul University, Chicago, IL.  She graduated from the Core Coaching Curriculum at The Coaches Training Institute in San Rafael, CA.  She is a Certified Licensee for the Get Hired NOW! and the Get Clients NOW! Programs.  Coach Joan also has achieved the level of Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) and Certified Behavioral Interviewer, DDI.  She is qualified to administer and interpret the MBTI, Strong Interest Inventory and Kerwin Values Survey.  Coach Joan has also successfully completed the “Career Clarity Program” taught by Carol McClelland, PhD, founder of Transition Dynamics.

1. What career changes have you made ?  Why did you become a coach?

I have made many career changes in my life, some out of choice, some out of necessity.  I started out my career in telemarketing sales during high school as I paid my own way through private school. I found that I actually enjoy sales and talking to people.  I also worked as a legal secretary / law clerk for 3 years during college as I thought I wanted to be a lawyer.  After my first layoff, I worked part time as a tutor at a small business school which eventually led to me teaching Reading, Math, Language and Study Skills to college level students.  This led to a job as a Career Counselor and Teacher at the College.

I got my big break into the Corporate world after applying for a unique Training Manager position at Abbott Laboratories which involved dealing with adults struggling with Reading and Math.  I did this for 2 ½ years and, you guessed it, was laid off again.  Thankfully, I hit the pavement within the company and found a Recruiter position which got me into the Human Resources field.  I was a recruiter for 5 years at 2 companies:  a healthcare company and a telecommunications company.  I hired the 1,400 people at all levels from that experience.  I got laid off again and decided to change focus to get into more employee relations type of Human Resources.  I did that for 3 years and, after the 4th layoff of my career, decided that I was going to do what I really enjoy – coaching people on career issues.

 

2. What excites or ignites your soul?

I am truly pumped when people create a new vision of themselves which is in alignment with their values.  I enjoy helping people figure out what satisfies them, learn about their skills and then apply that learning to the career discovery process. 

3. What's your favorite element of the Career Clarity Program and Purpose Clarity Program?

I love many aspects of the CCP but the one thing that sticks out is the creative way Carol designed the program to randomly select a sampling of the person’s skills and interests to generate many career options.  It is creative and powerful because in many cases it is something very unique and fulfilling for the individual.

4. What results have other clients achieved while working with you?

I help my clients get clear on what they must have, would like to have and need to avoid in their career in order to be satisfied.  I have worked with clients on major shifts as well as minor tweaks to help them be more aware of career satisfaction.  I also help people get more information, both from the computer AND the real world of people and places, to get a more realistic picture of what it would be like to go into a new arena.

 

5. How do you typically work with clients interested in the Career Clarity Program and Purpose Clarity Program?

If they are in the Denver area, it’s a combination of face to face and phone communication.  I lead the person through the program and they do the homework.  In our coaching sessions, we discuss the a has and the barriers that they are facing to moving through this challenging process.  If the person is outside of Denver, it’s all over the phone where they do the assignments, I read them before the session and we discuss, problem solve and plan in the coaching session.
